On November 13, 2008, Education Sector hosted a special evening reception, book signing, and discussion with Peg Tyre, author of The Trouble With Boys: A Surprising Report Card on Our Sons, Their Problems at School, and What Parents and Educators Must Do. (Crown Publishers)
The Trouble With Boys builds on Tyre's 2006 cover story for Newsweek that explored why boys are drastically falling behind girls in school. The article launched a fierce national debate over whether boys are truly "in crisis."
For the discussion, Tyre was joined by Sara Mead, a senior research fellow in the Education Policy Program at the New America Foundation and author of Education Sector's widely cited report The Truth About Boys and Girls, and Richard Whitmire, an editorial writer for USA Today and author of the blog Why Boys Fail.
Peg Tyre is an Education Sector nonresident senior fellow. Until recently, she was a senior writer at Newsweek specializing in social trends and education. She has won numerous awards for her work, including a Clarion Award and a Pulitzer Prize.
Reviews of The Trouble With Boys:
Diane Ravitch, author of Left Back: A Century of Battles Over School Reform:
"A terrific book, solidly documented… Should be helpful to parents and teachers who need to understand why boys are falling behind, and to do something about it."
Mel Levine, M.D. author of A Mind at a Time:
"Boys have their troubles and The Trouble With Boys so sensitively reveals them. Parents, teachers, and others of us who work with kids will do so more effectively having read this vital book. Boys everywhere will be the fortunate beneficiaries of Peg Tyre's insights and suggestions."
