This summer, the Obama administration implemented long-debated regulations designed to crack down on abusive for-profit colleges while simultaneously fighting to preserve Pell grants during contentious debt ceiling negotiations. But while these moves were important, they still leave large open questions about how the administration will pursue its goal of regaining the world lead in college graduation by 2020.
The 2011 Washington Monthly College Guide provides answers to these questions through its innovative college rankings that measure contributions to science, service, and social mobility, along with in-depth articles that describe a nonprofit online college that is beating the for-profits at their own game, a case for radically overhauling the college remediation system, and the story of a company that will change college admissions as we know it.
Panelists for this event include: Zakiya Smith, Senior Advisor for Education, White House Domestic Policy Council; A. Craig Powell, CEO, ConnectEDU; Robert W. Mendenhall, President, Western Governors University; Kevin Carey, Policy Director, Education Sector; Paul Glastris, Editor, Washington Monthly (as moderator), with introductory remarks by Jamie Merisotis, President, Lumina Foundation for Education.
This event will be videotaped and recordings will be available following the event.
Education Sector and Washington Monthly thank the Lumina Foundation for its support of this event.
