Nearly 50 percent of college students attend a community college. But only recently have community colleges received national attention, thanks to a focus from President Obama on the need to improve higher education attainment in America. We demand a lot of these schools today—educate students of all ages, provide training for workers, move students to the four-year system, and accept virtually anyone who comes through the door—but give them far less money than traditional universities.

Our work strives to highlight successful community colleges by ranking the best of these schools nationwide and bringing attention to those at the top. We also see community colleges as a major potential source for innovation, as their tight budgets and limited resources requires trying new approaches to teaching in order to be more productive.
