Washington, D.C. – In an era of increased accountability, educators are searching for new ways to boost student achievement. A wide range of district, state and national leaders are considering a basic but bold solution: extending the school day. A new report from Education Sector shows that while the logic of adding school time is clear, the potential for time reform rests not with the quantity but the quality of time spent in school.
In this comprehensive analysis, Education Sector Senior Policy Analyst Elena Silva examines both the educational and political dimensions of school time reform. Silva finds that extending school time can raise student achievement in low-performing schools, and close racial and class achievement gaps by increasing learning opportunities for the students most in need.
But the report also shows that improving teaching and learning is not as simple as tacking on time to the school day, and it makes recommendations for policymakers about how to best leverage time in and out of school to improve student learning.
Silva says, "Extending the school day is a major change and challenge for schools and districts. If policymakers want to help schools improve student learning and meet the goals of NCLB, they need to help schools use time in more effective ways, not merely add more time to school."
