Avery Newton is a rising senior at the College of William and Mary, originally hailing from Concord, Mass. At W&M, Newton is studying education policy, sociology, and theory, a major she created for herself. She has conducted two independent education policy studies: one on summer learning loss and year-round schooling, and the other on rural education technology practices in the U.S. Next year she will begin an honors thesis on the relationship between state-level education governance and the creation and analysis of state standardized tests. Newton is passionate about K-12 education, and she hopes this will serve her well at Education Sector and beyond.
Newton spends her spare time playing the drums and ukulele, eating Greek yogurt, and doting on Horace Mann, her fellow “Massachusettsian” who helped pioneer public education.
