Accountability

Ohio, the 7th most populous state, has relatively low educational attainment. It has one of the highest percentages of adults with only a high school diploma.

The University System of Ohio, comprised of 14 public university campuses, 24 regional branch campuses, 23 community colleges, one public medical school, and over 200 adult work-force education centers and training programs collectively serves over 500,000 students. Its flagship, the Ohio State University, resides in Columbus.

Ohio's higher education accountability system's strengths are:

  • Gathering information on a wide breadth of performance measures.
  • Collecting and reporting data in a timely fashion.
  • Formally linking budgetary decisions to the performance of state postsecondary institutions.

Ohio's higher education accountability system needs work in:

  • Separating data by important socioeconomic factors (race/ethnicity, gender, income, first-generation status, transfer students, etc.).
