Texas Score Card
Texas has low educational attainment. It ranks second, 11th, and eighth, respectively, in the percentage of adults with an eighth-grade education or less, some high school, and only a high school diploma. Texas is also expected to have an 18 percent increase in high school graduates from 2007–08 to 2017–18. Nearly 90 percent of Texas postsecondary students attend a public institution.
Texas' higher education accountability system's strengths are:
- Gathering information on a wide breadth of performance measures.
- Collecting and reporting data in a timely fashion.
- Separating data by important socioeconomic factors (race/ethnicity, gender, income, first-generation status, transfer students, etc.).
- Comparing data across time and/or against peers.
- Aligning state priorities with concrete goals for achievement.
- Formally linking budgetary decisions to the performance of state postsecondary institutions.
- Proactively informing prospective students, parents, and the general public about the performance of state colleges and universities.
